Just in time for Christmas: Drive Someone Insane with Postcards!
You are bidding on a rare chance to traumatize a treasured friend or relative with baffling, mind-numbing, mystery correspondence from abroad.
Here is the arrangement:
I will be spending the Christmas holiday in Poland in a tiny village that has one church with no bell because angry Germans stole it. Aside from vodka, there is not a lot for me to do.
During the course of my holiday I will send three postcards to one person of your choosing. These postcards will be rant-ravingly insane, yet they will be peppered with unmistakable personal details about the addressee. Details you will provide me. The postcards will not be coherently signed, leaving your mark confused, guessing wildly, crying out in anguish.
“How do I know this person? And how does he know I had a ferret named Goliath?”
The current bid, as of this posting, is $250. Not a bad way to subsidize one’s vacation.
Because nothing says Christmas like Sea Lion Show or Dondi the Elephant, we are going out with friends tonight to Santa’s Enchanted Forest! Carnies! Obnoxious teenagers! Fried food! Tilt-a-Whirl! and how could we pass up Wayne Francis: Puppeteer and Ventriliquist?

SANTA ROCKS!!
The most excellent Maine company LibraryThing has hit upon a fabulous holiday idea: Secret Santa for bibliophiles:
“The idea is simple. Pay $25. You play Santa to a random LibraryThing member, and buy them up $20 worth of books, based on their library or a short description. Someone else does the same to you. LibraryThing orders the books and pays the shipping, so no addresses are exchanged.”
This idea is fantastic on several levels. For recipients, the element of (educated) surprise is pretty intriguing. Your Santa will choose books for you based on what’s already in your library and what you tell them about your literary preferences. Even if you don’t want to participate financially, you can still help Santa choose books for other people. And you can make a gift out of participation — you pay the fee and your friend/boss/cousin gets the books. Registrations are due by noon tomorrow, though, so get your Santa hats on while there’s still time…
Just not sure what to get for that hard-to-shop-for woman in your life? Make her one lucky lady with the “Edelweiss” shoe!
Go ahead, click on the photo to get a super-sized look at these puppies. Hell, try a few of the other colors. The best that the (closeout) retailer can say about them is that they’re “sure to catch some attention.” They’re on sale for 37% off, but something tells me there are bigger bargains in store for those with a bit of patience.
