Amazon Announces Kindle, eBook Reader11.19.07

kindle

So, Sony and a few others have had eBook readers for awhile…what’s the big deal about this one? Two things, apparently.

1) Amazon is behind it, meaning they’ll probably have more content. All NYT bestsellers and new books are $10. Presumably older books will be cheaper.

2) It uses frickin’ cell phone technology. That’s surprising, to say the least. No subscription fees (that’s why the thing costs $400) and you can shop for books anywhere you can get a cell phone signal.

It’s definitely not the hit out of the park that Amazon’s mp3 store is, but it’s not bad. Still too pricey, and…hello, fugly. I don’t want a keyboard on my book to remind me that I’m not really reading a book. I imagine that making the eInk screen look as good as it does and be touchscreen is out of the realm of possibility now, but if anything begs to have an onscreen keyboard, it’s this. You basically only want to be able to search for books to download. And maybe to search for the dirty parts in Forever…

Tube is NOT a lifting device

You can learn a lot from these comics. A lot about what, exactly, is an interesting question.

Mac OS X Leopard Released11.05.07

Leopard is out.
It’s got built-in incremental backups, multiple desktops, and something like VNC (via iChat). So far the rest looks like fluff, although maybe upgrading would fix stuff the auto-updates broke, like the modem (known issue, won’t answer faxes as of 10.4.9).

free remote control software?11.02.07

Being competent at solving computer problems, I regularly have friends and family come to me for help.  I’m happy to assist (in exchange for food and booze), but when the person happens to be out of town it can be challenging.  Does anybody know of good, free remote control software that works when both systems are behind NAT (firewall) devices?

Wireless SD card, awesome for new parents10.30.07

Eye-Fi
Me want. Gizmodo just had a review of this thing, which appears to sit inside your camera, connect with your wifi network, and automatically download your camera pictures as you take them. No more syncing. It also apparently will automatically push stuff up to the photo sharing site of your choice.

Given that the main thing keeping us from putting up more pictures of Cameron is the annoyance of syncing, this would be cool. $100 cool? Not sure. But given that it comes with 2GB as well, that’s pretty nifty.
