Someone watched Point Break too many times08.19.08

Just because you may be able to surf a tropical storm, that doesn’t mean you should try to kiteboard it.

My Goofy Feet04.30.08

fivefingers

As I get older, it seems that I start caring less what people think about me.  It’s not in the, “dude, I’m so cool, I’m wearing this T-shirt by a band you’ve never heard of,” way, but more in the, “I completely realize I’m going to look like a fool, but my comfort just trumps that.”

The first hump was probably the spandex cycling pants.  Sure, you may look cool in a rarefied group of people, but the vast majority of people look at you and chuckle, if you’re lucky.  Next came the recumbent bike.  Sara inherited my old one, so I’ll write more about the new fancy one later.

Most recently came these sandals, inspired originally by an article in BoingBoing.  I inherited annoying foot issues from my Dad (which I will lovingly pass on to Cameron…circle of life baby) including a big toe that kinda wants to point up, and arches that are so high that my footprint is made up of the front of my foot, and then the heel…they aren’t connected.

It’s Official… Online Gaming now a Sport01.15.08

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding:
ESPN to Broadcast Major League Gaming
MLG on ESPN.com

“Pro video gaming offers sports fans everything they love about sports—great teams, break-out personalities and stars, and exciting competition,” said Matthew Bromberg, President and CEO of Major League Gaming. “MLG’s digital properties now reach over four million fans a month, and millions more follow the League on TV, mobile devices, and X-Box Live. We’re excited to build upon that audience with ESPN.”

So, what do the CultureGeeks think? I think the level of competition has reached a stage where gaming qualifies as a sport. A spectator sport however? That’s a pretty bold statement. I’ll watch it but will the novelty wear off quickly?

This Classic skating site I found has a lot more fun stuff, but it is a bit of a pain to navigate, so allow me to point you to the best parts:
More Skate Magazine covers
Skate stickers
Covers of old Skate programs. Some of the 60s ones have great design, but this modern one cracked me up by how horrible it is.

Better Living Through Sport: The Top 10 Inspirational Sports Movies11.04.07

This morning, 37,000 competitors in the New York City Marathon will be running a block away from my apartment.

Last night, I watched the DVD of Pride, an “inspired by true events” sports flick that had an amazingly short theatrical run. Because it’s pretty crappy. In fact, there’s only two whole reasons to watch Pride:

  • One is Terrence Howard’s great performance as Jim Ellis, the janitor-turned-swim-coach who saves a failing neighborhood rec center and a bunch of troubled teens by creating a swimming program. Howard is truly turning into one of the finest character actors around.
  • I’d say another 1/2 of a reason is the half-of-a-performance Bernie Mac turns in.
  • One more 1/2 of a reason is the swimming action, because underwater camera shots of competitive swimming are just really exciting.

(The two biggest reasons to stay away from Pride are bad, cliche-ridden writing and Tom Arnold (ugh). Nevertheless, I’m a sucker for these types of movies, so I cried anyway when the Philly kids overcame their obstacles and improved their self-esteem through sport.)

I love inspirational sports movies, completely irony-free. So I compiled a list of the Top 10 Inspirational Sports Movies. Behold:
