9/11 from someone who lived there.02.12.08

Now, I’m not a September 11th junkie or anything, but I just happened across this Flickr photoset the other day, and was kind of blown away by it. Not only is it really interesting to see the whole experience from the point of view of someone who lived a mere block away from the WTC (and who is a photographer, nonetheless) - but the way he writes about it is calm and matter of fact, and way more accurate than any news report has been.

It’s also interesting because, well, I live in NYC now. I wasn’t here during the day the towers were attacked, but now I know that area really well. It’s interesting to see what exactly that experience was like. And scary, too, of course. But something about this city…people here seem to move on through anything that happens, and with remarkable calm. Amazing.

The pictures are quite beautiful as well.

MoveOn members have spoken02.01.08

obama and they want Obama by a landslide.

I find this especially interesting when I consider that MoveOn started as, essentially, an endorsement of the idea that Bill Clinton’s value as President outweighed what was happening in his personal life. That loyalty does not extend to Hillary, apparently.

The voyeur in me would love to be a fly on the wall in the strategy room at Hillary’s campaign headquarters today. Do you think she regards this as a major defeat, or do you think that she had already written off the more liberal end of the voter spectrum?

Bush asks for ‘direct and rapid’ stimulation01.18.08

for the economy.

Bush spoke by phone with congressional leaders for about 30 minutes Thursday afternoon, discussing ideas for stimulation just hours after Bernanke had issued his firm endorsement of a fiscal quicky to help steer the economy away from recession.

Follow the Money12.31.07

“These events cannot, of course, be attributed solely to climate change, but they are in line with the pattern that we can expect in the long term: severe storms, more heavy rainfall and a greater tendency towards flooding,” said Peter Hoeppe, head of the company’s Re’s Geo Risks Research Department.

Some Sierra Club dude? Nope, it’s from the world’s second largest re-insurer. The people who, you know, actually have to pay for this crap. Although it should be noted that the number one most expensive disaster of the year, an earthquake in Japan, was pretty climate-independent.
