Blogging Software (part 2)11.06.07

WLW And this is how Windows Live Writer rolls. I’m going to make this a purposefully small post to see if it can handle the taller image better than wordpress itself. All things considered, if you want something fancier than Wordpress, I think this is the way to go, as would be MarsEdit if you’re Mac-inclined.

Note: A few strange things.  It doesn’t handle the image being taller than the post any better than Wordpress, hence this note.  Also, it did something funky with the post time.  It postdated the post, so it wasn’t going to show up for an hour or so.  Nothing that can’t be fixed, and it did remind me to change the timezone of the blog so things show up at the proper time, but it’s a little strange.  Still, I’ll be using it, I think.

Blogging Software11.06.07

I started reading about MarsEdit today, a blogging client for the Mac. I figured there must be something along the same lines for PC, and in the process I found out about two different solutions, one of which would probably work for everyone here.

1. Windows Live Writer - It’s a free downloadable application from Microsoft. Enter in your blog address, it determines if it’s common enough for it to know the API (textpattern, wordpress, blogger, etc. are supported), then enter your login information and you’re posting away. Here’s the UI:

2. ScribeFire - It’s a Mozilla plugin, which means it’ll work for 90% of the people here. It’s what I’m using to compose this post right now. I’m thinking it’s actually clunkier than I’d like. Little things are off…Ctrl-B doesn’t work to bold (Even the Wordpress online editor does that), and the image utility allows me to upload images nicely, but not to resize/set up thumbnails. So, hopefully by the time you read this the screenshot above won’t be actual size. It is as I’m writing this. Below is the screenshot from ScribeFire.

Again, I’m going to have to go back in and edit this some more to get it front page worthy before I actually publish this.

Both options seem to handle categories really well (even though they call them tags), and ScribeFire lets you save your progress, but in a clunkier way…you save it as a “note” which you then publish. Live Writer appears to save on your computer. So, you pick your thick or thin client, apparently, and go from there. My next post will be with Live Writer to see a) how the image handling works and b) how the WSYWIG editor is, and especially the html that it generates from there.

Powered by ScribeFire.

Hats off to Margi10.25.07

I didn’t realize it was Her Royal Fabulousness who named the site. I can not fucking believe that we started talking about CG five years ago. Five! And I still like Jen’s suggestion that we prominently feature a Captain James Tiberius Kirk decorated egg somewhere on the site.

Wondering10.25.07

…if we can put a link to “write post” on the front page? Or is it there and I’m just incapable of seeing it?
