As I listen to it, it’s kind of creepy. Most of the songs have lyrics that drift into scary-crazy territory. I’m not sure any of them isn’t pretty dark.
The lyrics seem a little more raw, too. Less polished poetry. Not in a bad way, just a change from the earlier albums.
The country influence is pretty minimal this time around.
I like it.
That said, the last track, 30+ minutes of crickets chirping, is kind of annoying.
I know I’m alone here, but while I love her voice, her music hasn’t ever done anything for me. It seems I listen to her new albums once or twice and move on. I know I’m missing something, as it seems everyone I know likes her.
I’ve listened to very little else since March, and I think it’s her best work yet. It is definitely dark — this record is more sinister than melancholy — but she’s in her element. And I agree, Jeremy, that her lyrics are more raw this time around, but to me it’s still very poetic.
Actually, I have more to say.
