“Highbrow films gather dust”

Posted in Movies on May 14, 2008 by Kate

A report out of Harvard Business School finds that people using services like Netflix rent DVDs that they think they should watch but that those lie around unwatched while they watch the DVDs that they actually want to watch.

I find that this is true at our house, but for a different reason. We watch the movies that James has chosen together, but the DVDs that I choose - often documentaries or independent/foreign films - have to wait until I’m home alone.

I’m totally guilty of this too. Especially for movies I believe I “should” watch instead of those I actually want to. Every now and then I’m surprised…I thought Juno was going to be a “should” movie, but I’ve watched it several times over again because I enjoy it so much.

The documentaries are particularly hard to get into, especially the ones we tend to get because I know I’m just going to get all riled up about them. Sicko, in particular, was hard to start, but we ended up watching it several times over in the process of showing it to different people.

I rent a lot of cinema classics and indie films that I know I should watch because they are so influential. But then those sit around while I eagerly rip open The Mist. Thing is, I really tend to end up loving the movies that sit around for a while as well, but they tend to require a certain mood. Whereas most of the evenings where I am just tired and want to watch a movie, I really want the cinematic equivalent of junk food. That said, I love Netflix because the gathering dust movies can sit around for a while without it being costly - which used to always bite me in the ass at the video store. Oh, and I get 8 at a time! Because I am fricking crazy like that.
