Mix mistress

Posted in 80s, Music on Mar 01, 2008 by jessicat

I’m putting together a gift mix of 80s covers — either covers that were released in the 80s (like David Lee Roth’s version of “Just a Gigolo”), or iconic/craptacular 80s songs that have been covered more recently. I have a few gems in my collection already, but I’m looking for more. Any ideas?

I’m sure I have worse things in my collection, but Nouvelle Vague comes to mind first… I believe it was the word “craptacular” that did it. I like Bande a Part, but the concept gets old pretty fast. Still, they they do have a few really entertaining covers. Their version of “Marian” works so well that it makes my brain short out in denial.

This page had some good ones, although it seems like they lumped sample-heavy tracks in with genuine covers:

I think you should go with hit songs from the 80s that were covers - cause the modern cover versions of 80s (and early 90s) songs are sooo played out. Though it you haven’t heard Tom Jones’ version of “Situation”, you ain’t living.

“Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go”, Soft Cell (both songs are covers!)
“New Rose”, Rachel Sweet (excellent cover of the Damned)
“Judy In Disguise”, Silicon Teens
“Puttin’ on the Ritz”, Taco
“When You Were Mine”, Cyndi Lauper (doing Prince)
“Telegram Sam” or “Ziggy Stardust”, Bauhaus
“Route 66″, Depeche Mode
“People Are Strange”, Echo & the Bunnymen
“Head On”, Pixies
“Love Will Tear Us Apart”, the Swans
“Ball of Confusion”, Love & Rockets
“In the Ghetto”, Nick Cave (one of his many covers)
“Get Down Make Love”, Nine Inch Nails
“Wild Horses”, the Sundays
“Dear Prudence”, Siouxsie & the Banshees (or any of Through the Looking Glass)
“I Want Candy”, Bow Wow Wow
“I Fought the Law”, the Clash
“Victoria”, The Fall
“Roadrunner”, the Modern Lovers
“Let’s Dance”, the Ramones
“My Way”, Sid Vicious
