9/11 from someone who lived there.
Now, I’m not a September 11th junkie or anything, but I just happened across this Flickr photoset the other day, and was kind of blown away by it. Not only is it really interesting to see the whole experience from the point of view of someone who lived a mere block away from the WTC (and who is a photographer, nonetheless) - but the way he writes about it is calm and matter of fact, and way more accurate than any news report has been.
It’s also interesting because, well, I live in NYC now. I wasn’t here during the day the towers were attacked, but now I know that area really well. It’s interesting to see what exactly that experience was like. And scary, too, of course. But something about this city…people here seem to move on through anything that happens, and with remarkable calm. Amazing.
The pictures are quite beautiful as well.
Many of the same shots, one year later

You know, I’ve avoided that location like the plague despite it being a stone’s throw from my office. I think I feel like it would be somehow disingenuous or voyeuristic to go there and see it because I wasn’t here then. On the other hand, it’s part of the city I live in now and maybe it’s time to stop purposely avoiding it because I feel like an outsider to that whole experience.
I wouldn’t make a special trip, just wait until you have to stumble upon it. Because, really, it is just like the rest of NYC, but there’s a big hole in the ground (now filling up with construction action). I would never go there, myself, except that the PATH train to Jersey City is at the WTC site.
That said, when we finally go to the awesome bargain department store Century 21, you’ll have no choice. It’s right across the street.
