PETA: Hypocrites
Not counting animals PETA held only temporarily in its spay-neuter program, the organization took in 3,061 "companion animals" in 2006, of which it killed 2,981. According to Virginia’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), the average euthanasia rate for humane societies in the state was just 34.7 percent in 2006. PETA killed 97.4 percent of the animals it took in.
So, is this just a bad seed PETA group in Virginia? If this becomes common knowledge, I figure this will make them even more ridiculed than when they ignore the point of Sicko and point out that Michael Moore is fat.
In courtroom testimony last year, a PETA manager acknowledged that her organization maintains a large walk-in freezer for storing dead animals, and that PETA contracts with a Virginia cremation service to dispose of the bodies. In that trial, two PETA employees were convicted of dumping dead animals in a rural North Carolina trash dumpster.
Bad PETA. You’ve been a very bad PETA.

If it’s true, it’s horrifying, but it might not be as simple as that press release makes it sound. The press release was put out by an organization that stands accused of being “an astroturf group that portrays itself as a grassroots organization while actually being funded by the fast food, meat, and tobacco industries. It [has] also [been] criticized [for] its efforts to portray groups such as the Humane Society of the United States as ‘violent’ and ‘extreme’.” (via Kottke)
Figures…I was suspicious of the PR Newswire, but looked around to find other things that looked valid. I didn’t look at the group which actually published it.
