Shipping = Landfill Stuffing

I’m trying (again) to find a reliable company that will ship one piece of furniture without swaddling it in plastic and/or styrofoam, i.e. just wrap the thing in moving blankets. We’ll even wrap it for you in our own blankets and drop it off at your distribution center. I’ve spent at least a day making calls, and there’s basically nobody.

Are they worried about liability or just pathologically bent on creating garbage?

I think that most companies move furniture in one of two ways, they either pack everything into one truck and deliver it to the destination in the same truck, or they put stuff on a palette and send it freight, which is kind of like a big mail system where it may change trucks several times. If you send it by the single truck method, they will blanket wrap, but they have at least a 1000# minimum, usually. If you ship freight, they not only won’t guarantee that something won’t get damaged if it’s blanket wrapped, they pretty much guarantee it will be destroyed, so insurance is out of the question.

When I mentioned to these people that I’m trying to avoid disposable packaging, they all seemed shocked, like they had never heard of or thought of such a thing, but what an interesting concept. I didn’t actually get any negative responses, I just got the confused reaction of somebody feeling a sudden massive paradigm shift. Seriously.
